Being (a woman) in Kazakhstan

“Being (a woman) in Kazakhstan” is a printed book that acts as a curated collection of writing, illustrations and photographs that narrate the experience of being a woman in Kazakhstan. The book exists as a single copy, and it was showcased at the 2022 Central Saint Martins Grad Show.

What is it like to be a woman in Kazakhstan? This book is a collection of personal reflections, as well as illustrations and photographs of various female Kazakh creators and cultural figures. As a social group that hardly gets enough recognition both within and outside of Kazakhstan, women of Kazakhstan don’t always get their stories heard, let alone solidified through printed media — and with this book, I wanted to change that, and create a narrative that is presented authentically and beautifully.

The book’ pages were printed at Panopus Printing on recycled 120gsm paper, after which I’ve folded & cut the pages, and finally, put them together using a French link stitch binding technique.

The work was submitted as one of my final year university projects, but if you’re interested in seeing more of the book, you are welcome to contact me
